George Berkowitz and the beginnings of Legal Sea Foods

George Berkowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1917. His parents were Russian immigrants who ran a small grocery store. When he was sixteen, his father died, and he took over the family business. He eventually expanded the store into a chain of supermarkets.

In 1968, Berkowitz decided to get into the seafood business. He opened a fish market in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which he called Legal Sea Foods. The company grew quickly, and today it has more than thirty locations in six states.

Berkowitz was an innovative businessman who was always looking for new ways to improve his company. In the 1970s, he started using computers to track inventory and sales. This allowed him to keep better tabs on what was selling well and what wasn’t. It also helped him make decisions about where to open new stores.

Berkowitz passed away in 2013 at the age of 96. His son Roger is now the CEO of Legal Sea Foods. Under his leadership, the company has continued to grow and thrive
